Last week, photographer Horst A. Friedrichs paid a visit to our factory in Warminster, where our Heritage Glove Collection is handcrafted. The reason behind his trip was to photograph what goes on behind the scenes here for his new book, which focuses on quality products that are made in Britain.

Friedrichs’ previous works beautifully document the details in the world around him. His subject matter has varied from 21st century rockers, to the beauty of Mali, to sophisticated driving style.

Horst used several elements of the factory in his images

As a believer of beautifully crafted items, Friedrichs’ new book will feature 15 of the best British brands today, including John Lobb, Brooks England, Anderson & Sheppard, Lock & Co. Hatters, and Lewis Leathers.

So what attracts Horst to this form of production? ‘I believe that it is important to document old traditions’ he says, noting that there are so many mass produced products in the world today. As traditional British manufacturers are becoming increasingly rare, an item of quality is worth that extra cost. Freidrichs likes how there is still a community of people out there who still look out for hand-crafted products.

The most interesting aspect of his research visits has been seeing the commitment of all the craftspeople he’s encountered. Some have worked at the same company for over 30 years, and he found their dedication ‘moving’.

Capturing important details during the ‘numbering’ process

The yet untitled book will be published by Prestel later this year. We can’t wait to see the finished piece!

*UPDATE* The book, Best of British: The Stories Behind Britain’s Iconic Brands is now out! We’re very impressed with how the final book turned out, and you can see a glimpse of the Dents section here! (Click on slide 3)
